Does Facebook ruin your marriage?

Almost everyone has a Facebook page. From your 13-year old niece to your 80-year old grandma, everyone uses social media networks to connect with others and strengthen their relationships across long distances.

But can Facebook ultimately ruin those relationships?

Five reasons why social media affects your relationship

Facebook has a way of highlighting the best and worst about specific people, which means it highlights the best and worst in marriages. Some ways social media affects relationships include:

  1. Pulls you out of your relationship – Social media is notorious for luring people from reality and sucking them into the internet. It also pulls you away from people you love, including your spouse.
  2. Creates the perfect storm for jealousy – It’s so easy to stalk your partner’s exes online; all you have to do is scroll down enough on their page to find all the dirty details from their past relationships, which is toxic for you. You can also monitor who likes their photos, statuses and other information.
  3. Establishes the perfect place for secrecy – Due to the popularity of DMs, you literally could talk to anyone online without your partner’s knowledge. It creates temptation for you and your partner whenever you are logged on.
  4. Makes you compare your relationship to others – Facebook also makes you compare every facet of your life to others. It makes sense that you would start comparing your relationship to others on your feed.
  5. Encourages external input – If you post about your relationship on your page, you ask for external validation or criticism. It opens up a doorway for negative perceptions from others to influence your choice to stay with your partner.

Whether you like it or not, social media has a strong influence on most people’s lives. It’s only logically that Facebook and Instagram start influencing your relationship in the process. However, social media doesn’t cause divorces – it only speeds up the process.
